De Blik van Willem Leijns / The Gaze of Willem Leijns

(a short video with commentary in dutch)

Managing clerk Willem Leijns worked on the 4th floor of the Industria Building, on the corner of the Dam square and Rokin. Being an avid amateur photographer he wanted to take photographs of the liberation of Amsterdam.
Instead he documented the chaos and panic after soldiers of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) opened fire. Together with photographers Margreet van Konijnenburg and Wiel van der Randen Leijns had a bird’s eye perspective on what happened. His images are the best-known of the large number of photographs that were taken that day.
